Tasmanian blackwood, crown cut: a golden to medium red-brown, often with darker chocolate banding and a silky lustre.
Botanical name: Acacia melanoxylon
Blackwood is diffuse porous, fine and even, and frequently shows a fiddleback shimmer. A warm red-brown with no open pores and a silky lustre is blackwood rather than walnut. The Tasmanian stock runs redder and more uniform than the Queensland. Grown in Tasmania.
Also held as edging. Leaves are generally available from 2500 to 3600 mm long. 3600 mm is always in short supply and needs its availability checked before it is specified. Natural timber, so it never repeats and colour and figure vary log to log: match a continuing job to the original order rather than to this page.
