Kwila (merbau), quarter cut: an orange-brown to dark red-brown with coarse open pores and straight lines.
Botanical name: Intsia bijuga
The giveaway is the yellow mineral deposit often found in the pores. Kwila is a durable, dense tropical hardwood. Grown in the Pacific and south-east Asia.
Leaves are generally available from 2500 to 3600 mm long. 3600 mm is always in short supply and needs its availability checked before it is specified. Natural timber, so it never repeats and colour and figure vary log to log: match a continuing job to the original order rather than to this page.
