American black walnut, quarter cut: mid to dark chocolate brown with a grey or purple-grey cast and straight, parallel grain.
Botanical name: Juglans nigra
Walnut is semi-ring porous, so the face shows fine but visible pore lines, with occasional darker streaks. The quarter cut gives calm, straight lines in place of the crown's arches. Grown in the eastern United States.
Also held as edging. Leaves are generally available from 2500 to 3600 mm long. 3600 mm is always in short supply and needs its availability checked before it is specified. Natural timber, so it never repeats and colour and figure vary log to log: match a continuing job to the original order rather than to this page.
