American black walnut, the most commonly requested dark timber Ventech holds. Mid to dark chocolate brown with a grey or purple-grey cast, cut on the crown so the face carries full cathedral arches.
Botanical name: Juglans nigra
Walnut is semi-ring porous, so the face shows fine but visible pore lines, occasional darker streaks and lighter sapwood. It is a true mid-depth brown, warmer than the grey-browns but a long way short of a red timber such as blackwood. The crown cut gives broad arched figure with defined growth ring boundaries: that structure, rather than colour, is what separates walnut from the dense eucalypts it is most often confused with. Grown in the eastern United States. AA is the select grade and AB allows more variation; the straight-grained quarter cut is listed separately.
Also held as edging. Leaves are generally available from 2500 to 3600 mm long. 3600 mm is always in short supply and needs its availability checked before it is specified. Natural timber, so it never repeats and colour and figure vary log to log: match a continuing job to the original order rather than to this page.
